Statement:
I want to tell you: Reflections and testimonies around cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy is not an illness, it´s a muscular suffering originated by an accident, mainly from birth or in very early ages. This photographic essay testifies the personal and social relationships of some children that are under the care of the PropPeople with Cerebral Palsy Association in Mexico, APAC.
These children are aware of their condition and everything that happens around them, because cerebral palsy does not affect the brain, intelligence usually remains intact and sometimes they can be brilliant or even superior in creativity and reasoning. This suffering does not mean the child is mentally retarded or lunatic.
“I want to tell you”, is what these children seem to express, asking us for permission to socially interact, to be accepted, to receive specialized medical care, to be loved and to enjoy life.
The purpose of this work, initiated more than 10 years ago, is to help the propagation of the real causes and characteristics of cerebral palsies.
The people that suffer this seem to tell us: You can help me by accepting me as I am… I want to tell you a lot of other things. But first, I need you to be willing to listen to me.
